The Hillingdon & District 2026 Competitions

EBC Members are invited to take part in the Hillingdon & District Competitions in 2026. If interested, please register on the entry form posted in the Geoff Millman Cabin. The Club closing date for entries is Friday, 13th March 2026.

No money is required now – the Club will fund any entries and recharge to members later in the year. The draws will be announced in late April/early May, and rounds will be played to a strict timetable - there will not be any extensions given regarding the ‘play-by’ date in any round.

A copy of the Competitions Rules will be sent to all entrants at the end of March or will be supplied on request. The finals are set to be played at Rosedale Park on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31st. Before entering, please make sure you will be available for Finals Day - non-arrival on the day itself will result in suspension for the following year. Hillingdon Competitions will continue to communicate information through the HDC Facebook page and website (https://hdbcomps.wixsite.com/mysite).

The EBC 2025 Fun Day

The 2025 Fun Day will live long in the memory of those who took part, both for the cameraderie and the fiendish inventiveness of the challenges provided by 'Uncle' Colin Williams.

The dress code for the day was mufti with a hat (but no baseball caps!). This provided an interesting group photo opportunity:

Divided into 6 groups of 6, each group started on a different one of the 6 games laid out for us. When all groups had completed all games,it was time out for tea, followed by playing revised versions of the 6 challenges. Each participant accumulated points for each game played and the highest scorer won. We ended the afternoon with a delicious fish & chip supper organised by Jane Harris.

To give a flavour of the activities:

Bowl to 5 columns (without going in the ditch!), with each column scoring different number of points

Tin can alley - bowl the bowl, hit a tennis ball on the string and hope it knocks a can off the ledge behind - simples!

Bowl into 1 of 9 squares, each square carrying a different number of points. The revised version of this game was the same - except you had to stand with your back to the target and bowl between your legs!

Ten pin bowling - knock down as many as you can! For the second version of the game, you had to bowl between the bottles to the ditch to score 10 points, losing a point for every bottle knocked down. If the bowl doesn't go in the ditch, no score!

Over the seesaw to land in a square to score points. In the second version of the game the highest points were nearest the seesaw so you had to put the brakes on somehow!

The target flag had a bull for highest points and two lower scoring areas. You had to bowl round the obstacle to land on the flag. In the second version of the game, there was no obstacle, but you had to bowl using your 'other' hand - very difficult!

This is the second and simplest version - bowl through a hoop to score the points for that hoop. The first version had a more complicated arrangement of hoops.

The weekend of 13th/14th September saw an exciting end to this year's Club Competitions.

A lot of effort by this year' finalists resulted in a very entertaining day & a half for the rest of us. Special thanks to Competition Secretary, Diane Hallam, for the seemless flow of matches over the weekend, President Mark Hallam as Master of Ceremonies, Jane Harris, Social Secretary and all her helpers for excellent catering support, and last but no means least, Green Ranger Robert Pearman for masterly preparation of the Green!

Theatre Trip HAIRSPRAY 2025

2024 Start of Season

The 2024 Season starts here - exciting, isn’t it? Just a few dates to note:

Saturday, 27th April: First roll up of the season, start 14.00. Everybody welcome!

Tuesday 30th April: Cavendish Bowlers On Tour leave for Bournmouth, 10.15 for 10.30.

Tuesday 30th April: Tuesday evening roll ups start, 6.15 for 6.30 (for those not on the Bournemouth Tour, obviously!)

Wednesday, 1st May: Wednesday afternoon roll ups start, 1.45 for 2.00.

Friday, 10th May: Film Night “Wicked Little Letters” - comedy starring Olivia Coleman, with robust language throughout! 6.30 start – let Paul or Gilly know if you’re coming if they don’t know already. Those who have seen it say it is very funny.

Sunday, 12th May: Open Day – well, actually only from 10 am to 1 pm! Come and be visible and friendly for potential new members.

Friday, 17th May: First Friday Night League matches, 6.15 for 6.30 start.

Plus of course, all the matches as shown on the 2024 Fixtures Card , which all players should by now have – if not contact Colin Williams or Mike Milward. An edited edition of the fixture list is also posted on the website. Look out for the Team sheets posted in the Geoff Millman Cabin and get your names down for a match (or two, or three……).

The 2024 Annual General Meeting will be held in the Edwards Pavilion.on Friday, 23rd February at 7.00pm.

All members are requested to come to the Annual General Meeting to elect the Committee and Officers for 2024 and to receive the Treasurer's Report and Accounts and other reports, and discuss any Club-related issues, as set out in the Notice of meeting.

COMPETITION SECRETARY SEASON END REPORT 2023

The curtain has just come down on the 2023 season with a superb Finals Day/weekend on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September. It was certainly a hot weekend in more ways than one with the sun beating down relentlessly (32 degree heat; phew!) and the calibre of the games played out.

A massive thank you to Gaye Armstrong and Diana Stuckey for donning their catering pinnies and stepping up to the mark in cooking bacon rolls for breakfast and pulling together filled baguettes for lunch. Well done ladies!

Many congratulations to all our competition winners and runners up and a big thank you to all markers and scorers.

Many congratulations too to all the winners and runners up of the internal competitions.

The 2023 season has been marred by a number of EBC’s stalwart playing members being plagued by injury and/or illness. It meant that the one day competitions were lower in numbers taking part and the knock-out competitions turned into a bit of a “dosey doe” as a number of partner changes were required before a wood was played. However, all worked out well and all knock-out competitions were played and completed.

We wish all our injured players a healthy and speedy recovery and very much look forward to seeing them back on the green in 2024.

2023 brought in some excellent new playing members. Jon Youngs was overall winner on Cavendish Day, John Powell won the Mixed Drawn Pairs with his partner Janet Brooks and Tom Wallcraft was a member of the runners up team in the Ferry Walsh Memorial. Well done guys! EBC encourages all its new members to go forward for the knock out competitions next year; especially the Junior Championships. Let’s make 2024 more robust with numbers taking part than it has been in a while.

A huge thank you to Jane Harris for once again doing an excellent job in organising all the raffle prizes for the competitions.

I would also like to say a big thank you to all those who took the time to bake for competition days. Homemade baking is always very much appreciated.

We now look forward to the Presentation Evening on Saturday 25th November. Attached is a table of winners and runners up for 2023.

Like last year, the engraving of the trophies will be done at the turn of 2024; in good time for the opening of the 2024 season.

As ever, lastly, but by no means least, a huge thank you to my forever wingman – David Levy.
