EBC has an Umpire!

While the majority of Eastcote bowlers hibernated during the winter season, Colin Williams spent his time studying to become a Bowls umpire.
Rather like the Driving Test, Colin had to pass a theory section, where you have to study the Bowls law book, watch a DVD, then answer 100 questions sent to you by The English Bowls Umpires Association. A sample question is “A bowl on its original course is deflected by a spectator’s hat which has blown on to the rink. The displaced bowl then hits the jack. What happens next?” You answer these questions at your own speed then submit them. The pass mark is 90%.
Having passed the theory you then apply to take the practical exam held at an indoor club over two days during the winter. Colin took his at Riverain Club in Hitchin and avoided the working party on the 22nd April. Members always think up an excuse for not helping out - we missed you, Colin!
The good news is that Colin passed. He may be the first qualified umpire Eastcote Bowling Club has ever had (if anyone knows different, let us know!), and his success is representative of the improving standard of bowls played. He can now officiate at national tournaments and can expect to become a more travelled man than he already is - keep your Freedom Pass handy, Colin !
